（三翼新闻中心记者 雷宇）4月15日晚7点，由化工、材料两院学生会学习部举办的英语演讲比赛在逸夫楼报告二厅顺利进行。台上选手慷慨激昂，台下观众热情配合。比赛桂冠最终由化工学院的7号选手敖婷婷（9.32分）和材料与光电物理学院的聂姗姗（9.858分）摘得。

整个赛事分为3个环节：主题演讲“The Society and I”，现场评委提问与即兴演讲。当晚,台下的观众毫不吝啬自己的掌声，当选手回答流畅时掌声连连，即使当选手站在台上，因一时紧张无语，台下的观众也会及时给予鼓励性的掌声，舒缓选手的紧张心情。台上台下良好的互动氛围一直持续到比赛结束。

Ladies and Gentlemen: good evening! I am very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. Today my topic is “The Society and I”.I hope you like it.

Now, when it comes to the society and people, we should know their relationship, isn’t? First, I want to ask you some questions.

a)      If you want to study, where should you go? It’s school;

b)      If you are ill, what place will you go to? It’s hospital;

c)      If you plan to travel abroad, how can you arrive? They are planes, trains, ships etc.

Yes, all in all, our society meets our needs. The great society is a place where every child can

find knowledge to enrich his mind and to enlarge his talents. It’s a place where people serve not only the needs of the body but also the desire for beauty and the hunger for community. Well, since the society plays such an important role in our lives, can we say one’s own ability is useless to the society? The answer is “No”, why? Because the society is formed by human beings. We are the parts of it, like the body as the society, perhaps you are his eyes, I am his arms and you are his legs. We can’t live without each other.

   When I was a child, I always got things from the society, however, now, I have grown up as an university student, my responsibility is not only to get from but also to five, that is to serve, not to be served. It’s quite right, but what should I do to the society? And how?

   Let me tell you a true story.

   His name is Congfei, once an outstanding singer, but sleep forever. In his life, he gave more than 400 performances for public without any money, however his family’s economic condition is quite poor. He totally contributed 146 children and adopted 37 orphans as his own children. The total money he donated is over 3,000,000 yuan. That is what he did to the society, what about you? And what about me?

In fact, like Congfei’s story, there are a lots of people need help. To face up to your challenges is our responsibilities of the 21th century. So we should devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion to the society the help everyone who needs help, It’s the best present for the society.

聂姗姗的演讲稿《The Society and I》

Good evening, everyone. My topic is: The Society and I----What shall we college students do for our society. We live in a society that consists of warmness and cruelty; of happiness and sadness; of the rich and poor; of love and being loved. And we cannot deny it is a society of humans and for humans, what we college students shall do for out society.

In contemporary society, we notice that college students’social sense of responsibility and the historic sense of mission are getting weaker and weaker to some degree. And we fellow students are limited in pursuing our individual ideal, but not relate closely both individual and our society. Besides, we cared more about our own destiny and pay more attention to the condition of our own development and the present benefit.

Some may doubt if such phenomenon are true, and then wonder what we should do to deal with such phenomenon. Honestly, I think, as a common college student, it is the right time to reflect upon ourselves now. It is the right time to change the desalination of the social sense of responsibility. And it is the right time to link ourselves with the big collective, but not always let you be a top priority.

No one can live without a good society, it enables us to have friends, to love parents, to go to college and acquire knowledge. And no one can deny the old saying-never forget to pay for a debt of gratitude after you receive it.

So I believe, for a better, advanced society, and a more harmonious society: it is the right time for us to be responsible, enthusiastic, and optimistic and to be the ambitious generation in society.
